Vicious Cycles in Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Leaky Gut, the Autonomic Nervous System and the HPA Axis. Part 3.
The reason tackling a leaky gut is so important is that it could in some cases be the first link in a chain of symptoms that result eventually in total mitochondrial failure.
We know already that the sympathetic nervous system is in disarray in Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia patients. We also know that these systems are physically situated around the gut, the intestines, the digestive system and the bowel.
What we have is a chicken and egg dilemma:-
My opinion is that there are 2 possibilities. This is not a particular concern as the course of treatment is the same irrespective.
1. There has been internal organic damage to the intestinal digestive tract resulting in inflammation being transmitted to the sympathetic and parasympathetic nerve endings in the vicinity of the damage.
2. There has been viral inflammatory damage of the sympathetic nervous system nerve endings resulting in inflammation of the gut and consequent symptoms of leaky gut.
Both of the above scenarios can lead to CFS and Fibromyalgia symptoms as a result of over production of Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S) which then starts a vicious cycle in the sufferers body.
The H2S in excess can cause further severe irritation of the sympathetic nervous system.
The sympathetics in turn control the lymphatic system which becomes very sluggish and lethargic in CFS sufferers.
Lymphatic congestion has been identified as a major cause of the increased toxicity in the blood of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome patients because they are so closely intertwined with the digestive system.
Research studies has shown emphatically that H2S has a severe impact on various other organ systems in Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia sufferers.
Particularly affected is the hypothalamus which detects minute changes in blood gases as blood passes around the brain.
The hypothalamus in turn has direct control of the endocrine system by controlling pituitary function.
And finally the pituitary gland is directly responsible for metabolic control by determining blood levels of thyroid hormone production, Thyroxine (T4) and Triiodothyronine (T3).
The pituitary controls the thyroid gland through production of its own thyroid stimulating hormones. (TSH)
Lowered thyroid function eventually results in a host of symptoms entirely concurrent with many of the symptoms of Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue (CFS) namely.
Homeostasis, (temperature control),
Fatigue and lethargy.
Muscle pain and weakness.
Memory loss and poor concentration.
Low exercise tolerance
Respiratory weakness.
Slow metabolism, constipation.
Menstrual problems.
Depression.
Poor skin and hair quality.
All these symptoms are of course frequently misdiagnosed for other illnesses.
We have all experienced the agony of trying to get an accurate diagnosis for our condition.
Trying to get a prognosis as you will have found is even more painstaking and this will continue to be one of the most difficult and painful features of these horrid diseases CFS and Fibromyalgia.
The good news is that as we get closer to identifying cause and effect for these conditions we can provide genuine intervention based treatments that interrupt the chain of systemic failures.
What I have always proposed throughout my work is that it is most logical to try and identify the root cause of any illness.
Treating the root cause of Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia is the obvious place to start to achieve the best, most effective and long term recovery results.
I also believe that to achieve lasting full recovery, all organ systems have to be repaired simultaneously to avoid the negative feedback cycles and vicious circles which can start up again at any time and result in failure of the CFS and Fibromyalgia recovery and treatment plan.
My protocol to date aims primarily at lymphatic and mitochondrial repair, which then encourages natural healing of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems (the autonomic nervous system).
We achieve a high percentage of success.
I propose that in addition to the lymphatic and mitochondrial protocols that patients experiencing any moderate to severe digestive involvement or with any history of digestive problems adopt the following protocol.
10g free form L-Glutamine daily.
Advanced probiotic and prebiotic supplements providing bifidus and acidophilus in a form not destroyed by normal digestive transit.
L-Glutamine is an amino acid that research studies indicate is in very short supply in Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia sufferers. It is highly recommended as an advanced gut restorative and for muscle function repair and recovery.
Prebiotics work in a superior manner to probiotics which studies have shown in some cases have difficulty surviving digestive transit.
High quality prebiotics such as acidophilus and bifidus reach the colon where they encourage growth of friendly bacteria.
L-Glutamine is implicated in muscle weakness and is often used in conjunction with Creatine by body builder and weight trainers to aid and assist rapid recovery from strenuous workout regimes.
In the final part of this series i examine the deeper effects of gut restoration and the CFS treatment protocol, and how the chain of decline is arrested and reversed as you return to full health.
