How Important is a Nutritious Diet?

In our busy world, many of us go through our day eating whatever is available at the time with little conscious awareness of how that food contributes to our efforts to remain healthy. When it comes to nutrition, diet is the single biggest contributor to overall health and well being, which makes how and what we eat more important than we realize. For most of us, the need to eat a nutritious diet is something about which we rarely think – as we eat to satisfy immediate hunger, provide energy when we are tired, or just because the clock tells us it is time.

Talk to your body

Your body, however, may be sending you various signals that you have failed to answer. Many of us experience cravings or unexplained hunger pangs within an hour or two after eating some less than nutritious food. We usually answer the call by eating something equally outside of the purviews of a nutritious diet and then wonder why the hunger refuses to go away. The fact is that your body has ways of crying out for food that meets its needs for a nutritious diet – you just have to be open to what your body is telling you.

Benefits of nutrition

The fact is that a diet high in nutritious value is something we should all seek for our own well being and general health. A nutritious diet, rich in vitamins, minerals, and the building blocks of life, is essential for a variety of reasons. To begin with, you need carbohydrates for the glucose that your body uses for fuel. Without it, you will be sluggish and tired all of the time. Proteins are required to provide the amino acids that help to maintain your muscle tissues. Even fat has its place in your nutritious diet, as it helps to regulate hormones and protect your membranes.

Calcium is critical for maintaining the health of your teeth and bones, and is but one of the raw ingredients that you can obtain from a nutritious diet. Vitamins can be found in abundance in your nutritious diet, and are critical components in helping you to enjoy a healthier body. Many of them work together with the aforementioned components to help your body function properly. B vitamins, for example, assist in the breakdown of carbohydrates, while A and C help your vision and immune system.

Putting it together

The hard part about nutritious diet planning is that most of us don't see proteins, carbs, or vitamins when we eat. You don't eat protein, after all – you chew on a piece of steak or a handful of nuts. Carbohydrates don't just magically appear as part of our nutritious diet plan; we eat vegetables and grains and other foods that contain carbohydrates and allow our bodies to do their parts. To really put together nutritious diet with which you can be satisfied doesn't have to be difficult, however. If you eat a variety of fresh vegetables, meats, fruits, and grains each and every day, you can rest assured that your nutritional needs will be more than well met.
