Is it true that Saw Palmetto (Biostim) Is better for treating hair than Finasteride?

Saw Palmetto is a small palm tree native to the eastern part of the United States. The berries contain a biologically active component similar in action to finasteride. The fat-soluble part of these berries has been shown to inhibit the conversion of testosterone into the active form, much like finasteride. Although there are several double-blind studies comparing saw palmetto to finasteride in the treatment of benign prostatic hypertrophy (enlarged prostate), there are no studies looking at its use in hair loss.

Hair Loss In Male

In male-pattern baldness, hair loss typically results in a receding hair line and baldness on the top of the head. Finally, hair loss may occur as part of an underlying disease, such as lupus or diabetes. Some medicines can cause hair loss.

Male pattern baldness is the most common type of hair loss. The primary cause of hair loss is genetics. That's inherited or androgenic hair loss and makes up the majority. It is caused by increased sensitivity to male hormones in certain parts of the scalp, and is passed on from generation to generation. Some men have areas on the scalp that are very sensitive to the male hormones that circulate in men's blood. The hormones make the hair follicles – from which hair grows – shrink. In men who develop male pattern baldness the hair loss may begin any time after puberty when blood levels of androgens rise. The first change is usually recession in the temporal areas, which is seen in 96 percent of mature Caucasian males, including those men not destined to progress to further hair loss.

Male Hair Loss – Tom's Story.

hair loss, thinning hair, male hair loss, female hair loss, trichology, trichologist, hair loss clinic, hair loss centre, hair loss treatments, hair loss treatments for men and women, scalp disorders, hair and scalp problems.

I started treatment in October 2005 after the fact that I was losing my hair was brought to my attention by someone that would probably have loved to have  seen me go bald. It seems that the people that do care about you probably have noticed that you're losing your hair, but are afraid to bring up the subject. After realising that indeed I was receding, I began researching as to how, or if I could rectify the problem. I was pretty clueless in terms of treatment procedures but was hoping that the Elton John option was a thing of the past! I had a few consultations before attending the Westminster Practice. The previous clinics had all told me that there was a strong chance that I would recover and get a full head of hair again. At the Westminster practice I was told that if I did treatment right, I would have my hair back again. Easy choice in the end.

For many men, losing hair is something will have to be faced as part of the aging process. If this is happening to you, you are not alone, as a simple walk down the street will show you. About 25 per cent of men begin losing hair before they reach 30 and two thirds before the age of 60. Sometimes men can begin losing hair in their teens and can reach their early twenties with very little, if any, hair left on the crown of their head. Usually, however, the hair loss is gradual, developing over a period of twenty to thirty years.

The Effects Of DHT: Hair Loss And How To Stop It

In both male and females hair loss can often be attributed to some sort
of significant hormonal change within the body, specifically changes
within the metabolism of Androgen present in an individual's body.
Androgen, a male hormone, plays a vital part in both the production of
hair, as well as the loss of it. Baldness commonly occurs when the
metabolism of Androgen reacts with a type of chemical enzyme, know as 5
Alpha Reductase enzymes, which has been known to attached or bind to
the male sex hormone Testosterone.

I have an oily scalp and I wash my hair twice a day. My forehead is receding and also my top is thinning. I am worried about my physical appearance if this problem persists. Can you advise me what I can do to improve my current condition.

You are probably suffering from Androgenetic Thinning (Male Pattern Baldness). This is a hereditary condition. The production of testosterone on the top of the scalp reacts to an enzyme called 5-alphareductase converting to di-hydrotestosterone (DHT). Presence of excessive DHT inhibits hair growth or shortens the growth cycle. It also increases the production of oil.
